The cotton yarns for this bag were hand dyed of natural plant dyes and then they were woven on a backstrap loom to make the fabric. The colors are soft and beautiful and woven into a sturdy fabric to last for years. 14 1/2" wide X 11" tall X 2 3/4" deep. Adjustable strap is 46" long. Large zippered pocket inside and zipper at top to close.
The producer of this item is Grupo Ajbatz' Bal' - a group of 27 Mayan women artisans who have been organized for 4 years as a cooperative of women doing traditional backstrap weaving. The women have learned from their mothers and grandmothers how to hand-dye yarn using local plants, bark, vegetables or fruit and make beautiful handcrafts with these hand dyed weavings. 140 people benefit from the earnings of this group—earnings so they are able to help support their families and especially to send their children to school.
The group is paid a wage that exceeds the Fair Trade minimum standards and also receives additional help with educating their children and growing their business.
