Conserve was founded in 2003 in response to the vast mountains of garbage and plastic bags that littered the streets of Delhi, India. The organization employs more than 300 poor urban women in the slums of east Delhi. Conserve provides a safe and environmentally-frie ndly environment for the women to collect, sort and clean plastic bags, and craft them into unique and colorful leather panels. Women are taught sewing skills and use the panels to create a line of beautiful bags and wallets.
