The 30+ artisans in El Mercurio have incredible knitting abilities but in the past had been unable to channel their talent in a marketable way. Before El Mercurio formed in 2003, some members washed clothes in the river, some shined shoes, and some worked as maids. But the income from these activities was never enough to lift them out of extreme poverty. El Mercurio has been able to improve their lives and share with the with the world their incredible talent since becoming a part of Fair Trade.
