Tagua comes from an endangered palm tree that only grows in the tropical rainforests of the South American Pacific coast. The nut is harvested after it has fallen to the ground, so no damage is done to the rainforest. This practice also discourages deforestation. The people who gather and dry the tagua nuts are small farmers who work the land. Employing them to gather the tagua nuts enables them to stay in their home communities instead of leaving to find scarce work in the city.
