Producer Story

Mennonite Central Committee (MCC) is a relief, development and peace agency of North American Mennonite and Brethren in Christ churches. MCC Burkina Faso works with artisans in and around Ouagadougou, the capital city, and in Bobo Dioulasso, Burkina Faso. Artisans work at the Centre National D'Artisanat and Le Village Artisanal de Ouagadougou, which since 2000 has showcased the work of Burkinabe artisans. The village provides a forum for artisans working in 25 different trades.

The balaphone is a West African instrument related to the xylophone and marimba. This one features eight rectangular wooden slats, arranged from low to high notes. The artisan tunes each slat by shaving its underbelly. Two rows of calabashes, also arranged from small to large, provide natural amplification.
